The Red Dog Yelps

 Operation Red Dog was a rather bizarre time in American history that caused great strife for Ronald Reagan towards the start of his term. See Operation Red Dog was a rather boneheaded plan that somehow worked (sorta) concocted among America’s resident white nationalist movement the plan went like this: The racist men would charter boats and put into Dominican waters where they planned to meet up with controversial former prime minister Patrick John who they would attempt to convince to foment a coup.

 Somehow this plan worked. Patrick John was very happy to have the men by his side and hired out a large contingent of men for very cheap and on April 27th 1981 Haitians side by side with the Klan flooded into Roseau. Patrick John said the now famous words that night at 11pm “Dominica for the purposes of the defense of the democratic process and the dignity of labor is now under an eighteen month military government”. For the papers back home this was a very hard article to write because nobody exactly knew the angle of this. Soviet Coup? White nationalist coup? This one corrupt guy has a weird taste in enforcers? Most newspapers picked an angle a few just threw up their hands and printed the story with no spin or context.

But as soon as the papers figure out what even is happening things become more complicated….

Don Black sits worried as Patrick John lazily looks over some papers suddenly Don Black blurts out what he has been wanting to say all day “You rejected our business licenses”. Patrick John looks up and takes off his reading glasses setting them down on top of the document “I am sorry but I don’t know what you are talking about Don” Don blurts out a big mistake “That is crap we made you the unquestioned dictator you have a hand in everything” Patrick sits back totally calm “Those things take a while to set up”. Don is getting mad now “No! NO! Listen we gave this t-“ Patrick cuts him off “You brought nine men I brought eighty five you have attached onto me like a parasite. You have attached onto the people like a parasite” Dom freezes his jaw drops along with his face “N-no come on Patrick I’m sorry! listen man we are in this together we can still help” Patrick smiles “I believe that ship has sailed Mr. Black…….you have forty five minutes consider it a running start”

Out of the 9 men 2 were killed Wolfgang Droege and Dom Black as for Patrick John’s government he escaped to Haiti without a shot after he saw how quickly Grenada fell. Eugenia Charles triumphantly returned to the capital a week later parliament quickly voting to return her to power she was for a few years a prime minister as popular as a queen.
